The Top Seven NYC Events This Winter
There’s a reason that winter is known as the “most wonderful time of the year” in New York: It’s the only season that brings twinkling lights, festive music, and delightful city-wide holiday celebrations. And although many people assume these things happen mainly before December 31, New Yorkers know that they actually continue all the way till the end of February. Check out our list of the most exciting and intriguing NYC events this winter still to come.
Winter Restaurant Week
In association with Wine Spectator magazine and the James Beard Foundation, Winter Restaurant Week sees eateries from casual cafés to Michelin-starred fine-dining destinations offering reasonably priced two- and three-course prix-fixe menus. Among this year’s 360 participants are big names such as Ai Fiori, Esca, Freeman’s, and more.
Lunar New Year
Lunar New Year is a huge deal in New York, as it’s a Chinese holiday and New York has a large Chinese population that observes it. Celebrations run from massive parades in Chinatown and Queens’ Flushing neighborhood, complete with lion dances, to a firecracker festival, performances at the Metropolitan Museum and Lincoln Center, and more.
Broadway Week, from late January to early February, is considered one of the hallmark events of the theater world’s calendar year. Tickets to productions including “Chicago,” “Dear Evan Hansen,” “Come from Away,” and “Phantom of the Opera” are sold on a two-for-one basis to make Broadway accessible to a wider audience.
Black History Month
Black History Month, running for the duration of February each year, can be observed with film screenings, interactive events, and more throughout the five boroughs. The Queens Library also holds the annual Langston Hughes Celebration, featuring poetry and even an opera performance.
February’s Fashion Week sees major designers’ fall and winter collections making their international debuts. Head to SoHo for runway shows by Rag & Bone, Jason Wu, Anna Sui, Prabal Gurung, and Jeremy Scott at Spring Studios, as well as stylish afterparties.
Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show
The Westminster Dog Show is when the Westminster Kennel Club famously judges dogs from 199 breeds in seven categories, including terriers, toys, and hounds. All breeds, along with mutts, may also compete in a miniature obstacle course that tests their agility and athleticism.
The Orchid Show is an occasion to admire thousands of beautiful orchids, creatively assembled by a different individual or institution every year. This year you’ll get to see celebrity floral designer Jeff Leatham’s colorful and unexpected take on the beautiful flower, as the Enid Haupt Conservatory transforms into a life-sized “kaleidoscope.”
